Phil Lesh to Headline NOCAL Cannabis Cup

Once upon a heady time, Bobby Petersen, beatnik, jazz enthusiast and fellow student of Phil Lesh at the University Berkeley approached Lesh with a sack of weed. In Lesh’s biography, Searching for the Sound, Lesh recalls the hazy afternoon with Petersen, who would later go onto collaborating with Lesh on “Unbroken Chain”.. “I’d done the usual amount of clandestine social drinking in high school, but I’d been turned off to it after one particularly blinding hangover. Bobby wasn’t much of a drinker either, and when he offered me some pot, I was ready to try it. I wanted to break out of the straitjacket of my inherited worldview, to see what, if anything, was outside my little bubble of consciousness, and I sensed that marijuana could be a tool for travel
After Petersen lit up some ganja doobies with Phil, the dynamic duo put Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring on full blast on phonograph. Petersen left the house to attend a poetry reading with a friend; Phil decided to stay back. When Petersen returned Lesh exclaimed, “YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT I’VE BEEN HEARING!” And the rest is heady history. The duo would reunite years later to pen the lyrics for, “Unbroken Chain”. Now in 2018, nearly sixty years after Lesh’s first experience with cannabis, Phil Lesh and Friends will headline the 2018 NorCal Cannabis Cup June 2nd and 3rd at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, CA. It’s fascinating to contrast historical instances of “then and now” and Lesh’s appearance at the Cannabis Cup is a perfect example. When Phil lit up the doobie with Petersen back at the University of Berkeley marijuana was still punishable by jail-time in California. Now in 2018 Lesh, in the spirit of freedom and triumph, will oversee a sea of ganja enthusiasts pointing to the future with an open mind and a lit blunt.
